II.                            Course Description

The first semester of this course teaches the basic skills of using the Microsoft Office Productivity Programs of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.   A student can advance at his/her own pace.  This class operates in a simulated business environment as a company where the teacher is the “employer” and the students are the “employees”. The goal for students at all levels is to understand the use of computer tools for research and production.  Students’ knowledge of current computer systems and basic concepts will prepare them for tomorrow’s evolving workplace environment. 

 

 Employees also work in teams to learn about starting up a small business.

CTE Standards

Business and Marketing Standard 4:  The student will communicate for a variety of purposes and audiences, using various tools and methods.

 

  • In order to meet the standard, students will be able to:
    • Communicate in a clear, courteous, concise, and correct manner on a personal and professional level.
    • Use appropriate vocabulary, grammar, and format in oral and written communications.
    • Apply basic business communication skills.
    • Use technology to enhance the effectiveness of communications.
    • Perform proficiently in team communications.

Business and Marketing Standard 5:  The student will utilize a variety of computer software demonstrating a mastery of workplace technical skills. 

 

In order to meet the standard, students will be able to:

    • Use touch-keyboarding skills to enter and manipulate text and data.
    • Perform basic file drive management (network, hard drive, CD-Rom, and floppy drive).
    • Use basic operating system navigation.
    • Enter, sort, and retrieve data from spreadsheets; and create formulas, use functions, create charts and graphs.
    • Enter, sort, and retrieve data from databases; define records and fields.  Create simple queries.
    • Create and edit electronic presentations with transitions, images and charts.
    • Identify, select, evaluate, use, customize and problem solve application software.
    • Integrate word processing, desktop publishing, database, spreadsheet, presentation graphics, multimedia, and imaging software as well as industry-specific and subject-specific software into real life problems.
    • Create, save retrieve, edit, and print word-processing documents.

II.                            Course Description

Internet Research, Microsoft Integration, and Publisher  are typically taught in the second semester.  A student can advance at his/her own pace. This class operates in a simulated business environment as a company where the teacher is the “employer” and the students are the “employees”. The goal for students at all levels is to understand the use of computer tools for research and production.  Students’ knowledge of current computer systems and basic concepts will prepare them for tomorrow’s evolving workplace environment. 

 

 Employees also work in teams to learn about sound money management skills and the financial planning process.
