II. Course DescriptionThe first semester of this course teaches the basic skills of using the Microsoft Office Productivity Programs of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. A student can advance at his/her own pace. This class operates in a simulated business environment as a company where the teacher is the “employer” and the students are the “employees”. The goal for students at all levels is to understand the use of computer tools for research and production. Students’ knowledge of current computer systems and basic concepts will prepare them for tomorrow’s evolving workplace environment.
Employees also work in teams to learn about starting up a small business. III. Program or CTE, District Standards/Learning Objectives, Workplace Standards
CTE Standards Business and Marketing Standard 4: The student will communicate for a variety of purposes and audiences, using various tools and methods.
Business and Marketing Standard 5: The student will utilize a variety of computer software demonstrating a mastery of workplace technical skills.
In order to meet the standard, students will be able to:
District Content Standards/ Objectives Read and Write Standard 2: Oral and Written Communication – Students write and speak for a variety of purposes. o Deliver focused, coherent presentations and dramatizations for a variety of audiences. o Edit for clarity, word choice, language usage, and syntax. o Incorporate photos, illustrations, charts, and graphs. o Exclude extraneous and inappropriate information. o Exclude irrelevant information and arguments. o Cite sources of information as appropriate. o Provide supporting ideas, evidence, and details for the purpose of communication. o Use business letter format o Record key information from listening, reading, or discussion in coherent notes. o Create and organize a structure appropriate to needs and interests of a specific audience. o Use information and ideas from primary and secondary sources accurately and coherently. o Proofread using reference materials, word processor, and other resources. o Consider paragraphs, margins, indentations, and fonts in page formatting. o Use precise vocabulary appropriate to the context of the communication. o Deliver oral presentations that include explanations and definitions according to the audience’s knowledge of the topic, interest in the topic and expected ability to use information.
Read and Write Standard 3: Oral and Written Conventionality – Students write and speak using formal grammar, usage, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization and spelling. o Identify and use parts of speech appropriately. o Use active or passive voice when appropriate. o Write with clarity using standard English conventions and appropriate grammar o Use complex punctuation with greater precision. o Use simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences in writing and speaking with correct grammar. o Use conventional writing accurately as applied to different genres.
Read and Write Standard 5: Research – Students read to locate, select, evaluate, and make use of relevant information from a variety of media, reference, and technological sources. o Use primary and secondary sources to gather information. o Paraphrase, summarize, organize, evaluate, and synthesize information from primary and secondary sources.
Workplace Standards Communication Skills - Demonstrates the ability to receive and relay information clearly and effectively
o Speaking – clearly organizes and effectively presents ideas orally o locates, understands and interprets written information in prose and documents to perform tasks o Writing – organizes and effectively presents ideas and information in writing
Worker Qualities - Demonstrates the characteristics of an effective workero Self-Management – demonstrates punctuality, readiness to work, initiative and the capacity for lifelong learning and personal growth

Students’ knowledge of current computer systems and basic concepts will prepare them for tomorrow’s evolving workplace environment.
Employees also work in teams to learn about sound money management skills and the financial planning process.
