Letter to Parents 10th Grade

Dear Parents,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and familiarize you with my teaching philosophy and the expectations that I have for your student.

Academically, I am well prepared to teach your student. I have a Masters Degree in Political Science and have extensive work toward a PhD in US History and African History. This is my 9th year teaching in public high schools and my 13th year teaching. Prior to teaching high school I taught college level students. I regularly tutor students in all subjects. I enjoy working with young adults and want what is best for their social and academic development.

It is my experience that 10th Grade is a time of tremendous growth for students. They are more secure in the high school environment and have many more friends than at the beginning of their first year. This presents a tremendous temptation to students that can often result in a lack of focus. They have increased their learning skills but they will need to work even harder this year to be ready for college classes next year. It is a long and difficult process that requires their continued effort, my support and most importantly your support.

My goal is that students advance their academic skills and grow as young adults. I will be doing all that is possible and in my power to assist them but it is ultimately their responsibility; they must be willing to do the hard work necessary to take the next step in their academic growth. Occasionally a student may wonder why I am doing something in the particular way that I am doing it but I assure you that there is nothing arbitrary or accidental about what I am doing. Everything that I do is backed up by years of experience, extensive education in the methods of teaching and a keen awareness of how students learn.

Occasionally it may be necessary for me to be quite strict in the application of expectations for your student. As young adults they may be resistant to these expectations. I assure you that it is only with their continued growth in mind that I implement these policies. Attached is the Course Expectations for your student. Please read and discuss this document with your student. Students and parents need to place their initials as indicated. If you have any questions please discuss them with your student and ask them to ask me for clarification.

Soon you will be able to check your students’ progress on-line through Infinite Campus. You can also check their “Assignment Log” in their notebook to determine their progress. Please contact me via phone or email if you have any questions or concerns. If your student is experiencing difficulties of any kind I need to know so I can support your efforts for their success.

I look forward to working with you and your student and I am looking forward to a great year!

Sincerely,

Bonnie L. Hutchens, MA Social Studies Bonnie_Hutchens@dpsk12.org 720-423-6685
