Sewing Tips

1. Clean your sewing machine every 8 hours of sewing. If you are using a fabric that creates a lot of lint, then clean even more frequently. To help  keep your sewing machine clean, use a plastic dust cover. If you leave your machine inactive for a long period of time, thoroughly clean and oil before sewing again.

2. Customize a Ready to Wear Garment and make it your own. Purchase small bits of ribbon, lace, trim or beads and sew to a collar edge, top of pocket etc. Add an applique, or try fabric painting, to give a unique "designer touch."

3. Start a journal of all of your sewing and design projects. It will be a record of your accomplishments. Attach samples of your fabrics used, pictures or sketches, needle type, thread, pattern numbers and sewing tips.

4. Look at fashion magazines to identify trends, create design ideas.

5. Enjoy the process of sewing; don't be afraid to experiment (that is what your scraps are for) and if you make a mistake, look at it as a design opportunity. Katherine McMann
