Hutchens: Tools For Success II
10th Grade Tools for Success II is a CEC course meeting Social Studies requirements.
Tools for Success II is a course that is unique to CEC
Middle College and the needs of our students.
My goal is to help students develop a wide variety of tool necessary
for success in life and a career. There are several ways that we will strive to
achieve this goal. Students will read and contemplate “Seven Habits of a Highly
Successful Teen” and try to apply those principles in their own life. They will
independently develop their own professional electronic portfolio that will be
available to them throughout their time at CEC Middle College. In late spring
all sophomores will take the Accuplacer exam. This is an exam that is required
of students who intend to take college classes in their junior year. Students
will identify their individual tutoring needs for taking the Accuplacer and
work individually to meet those needs. There is a significant component of the
course that is focused on personal finance and budgets. Students are expected
to look to the future and project their financial needs and resources at a time
in their life when they are ready to begin their chosen career. This is not a
budget for today but rather several years in the future.
My experience is that this course is a learning and growing opportunity
that will benefit the student to the degree that they desire – each student is
individual and the benefits in their own life are dictated by the effort they
put into the course. Learning is very independent and individualized in this
course and personal responsibility is key to success.
