Hutchens: Government (Fall)
10th Grade Government is a course which meets Denver Public Schools curriculum requirements. My philosophy of teaching Government is that students should not be expected to memorize a lot of minutiae but rather have a firm grasp of the origins of our government, the philosophies that shape our government and be able to recognize the role of government in their lives. I respect my students as young adults and expect them to have an opinion. I do not expect them to share mine - but I do expect them to be able to identify why they hold that opinion. We will begin the semester by exploring the origins of thought that brought about our Constitution. Students will understand the role of Hobbes and Locke in the formation of our system of government and the importance of their ideas even today. We will explore the various documents that are foundations of our government. This will culminate in a thorough exploration of the Constitution itself. Rather than reading from a textbook what defines our government they will read it from the document itself. This is a difficult task but a rewarding one. We will explore in detail the three branches of government and their role in our lives. Students have been assigned an extended project on Referendum C & D and through their work will begin to grasp the complexities of state and local government and the ways in which it affects our lives on a daily basis. All along the way I will try to help students understand the difference between “politics” and “governance”, Democrats and Republicans and develop an appreciation for the importance of their role as a citizen.
