Hutchens: Geography

9th Grade Geography is a Social Studies course meeting the curriculum requirements of Denver Public Schools.

My philosophy of teaching Geography is not so much that students should memorize a bunch of the trivia of maps and countries, but rather that they have an understanding of the issues facing humans around the globe. Further, I hope that they recognize that the human experience, whether close to home or far away, is very similar. For the trivia of maps and countries my goal is that they know how to look it up - if we know that skill then we can remain lifelong learners, no matter what happens in the world.

In Geography we focus on issues while exploring a region of the world. When we study Europe we will focus on the European Union and the role of government. When we study Eastern Europe we will focus on pollution and how it does not stay within political boundaries and always becomes a problem for all affected. When we study the Middle East we will focus on religion and the role it plays in peoples' lives. When we study Africa we will focus on AIDS and disease and the havoc it can wreak on a country and continent. When we study Asia we will focus on population issues and how that can shape the future of a country and the rest of the world.

I look forward to a successful semester!
